The Culver-Stockton College men and women's golf teams opened their respective seasons at the Cardinal Stritch Wolfpack Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Brown Deer Park in Milwaukee, Wis.
The men's team finished in a tie for fourth place in a strong field that featured four teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll, including defending NAIA national champion Grand View (Iowa).
The men played 36 holes the first day and the Wildcats completed the first and second round with identical rounds of 299 to stand in fifth place with a 36-hole total of 30-over 598. C-SC played the final 18 holes Tuesday at 14-over 298 to finish at 44-over 896.
That score was enough to tie Mount Mercy (Iowa), which entered the day five strokes ahead of the Wildcats. The Mustangs, ranked 18th in the national poll, shot a final round 19-over 303.
Ninth-ranked Cardinal Stritch captured the team title with a three-round total of 20-over 872 while 13th-ranked Taylor (Ind.) placed second with a score of 35-over 887. Grand View, ranked fourth in the national poll, finished seventh with a score of 59-over 911.
Individually, Jon Roberson was the top Wildcat finisher with a three-round total of 7-over 220. Roberson shot 73, 73, 74 in his three rounds.
Zach Kuhlman-Pfeiffer placed 11th overall with a 9-over 222. Kuhlman-Pfeiffer sandwiched a round of 72 around a pair of 75s in the tournament. Hunter Bettis placed 14th overall with an 11-over 224. He carded a 1-over 72 in the first round before finishing with a 75 and a 77.
The women's team only had three players competing and did not register a team score at the event.
Individually, Lucy Clark was the top finisher with a two-round total of 20-over 166. Clark carded an 86 the first day before moving up two spots after a second round 80.
Freshmen Haley Haugh and Kelsey Rees competed in their first collegiate event and both fared well. Haugh placed 30th overall with a 36-hole total of 40-over 186, while Rees finished 38th overall with a two-round sum of 56-over 202.
The men's team is scheduled to compete at the Mid-South Classic in Newton , Kan., Sept. 25-26, while the women are slated to compete at the Cougar Classic at Columbia (Mo.) College Oct. 2-3.
