MidAmerica Nazarene University scored five times in the second inning on its way to a 6-2 victory over the Culver-Stockton College softball team Friday afternoon at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Softball Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.
The loss eliminated the Wildcats from tournament competition and ends their season with a 24-26 overall record. MNU advances to play Grand View, a 3-0 winner over Baker, at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
After allowing a two-out double in a scoreless first inning, Wildcat starter McKena O'Donnell ran into trouble in the second inning.
The Pioneers loaded the bases with one out when a groundball by Kaitlyn Leffle was misplayed by C-SC shortstop Hannah Hollock allowed the tying run to score. Madison Butcoff followed with a RBI single to give MNU the lead and Maddie Johnson drilled a three-run double to extend the margin to 5-1.
The Wildcats answered with a run in the top of the third inning when Morgan Ledbetter delivered a two-out, pinch hit single to score C. Burris, who had singled earlier in the inning.
However, MNU got that run back in the bottom of the inning to give them its original four-run lead. Hanna VanLanker walked and scored on a two-out double by Leffle.
The Wildcats were limited to six hits in the game with Kroll being the only player to manage a multiple hit game, finishing with two singles. C-SC a runner on base in two of the final four innings but never threatened to dent the plate.
O'Donnell last just two innings before being replaced by Megan Creek in the third. O'Donnell allowed five hits, walked two and gave up five runs (four earned). Creek, meanwhile, hurled the final four innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run. She walked two and struck out one.
