The Culver-Stockton College golf teams opened their respective spring seasons Monday and Tuesday at the aptly named Battle on Beale Street Tournament at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.
The Wildcat men, led by junior Ryan Keller, shot a two-day total of 628 (311-317) to finish fifth overall as a team, 10 strokes behind winner the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), which carded a 618 (311-307). Taylor University (Ind.), the first round leader after a 299, struggled on the second day with a 321 and finished second at 620.
Keller, the Wildcats' top golfer, carded identical rounds of 75 to finish with a two-day total of 6-over 150 and end in a second place tie with Forian Loutre of Cumberlands, who also shot 75 both days. Both players were one shot behind medalist Trey Turner of Taylor, who carded a 76 in the second round after shooting 73 the first day to finish at 149.
Zach Kuhlman-Pfeiffer recorded two rounds of 79 to finish at 158 overall and finish in 21st place. Jon Roberson recorded scores of 78 and 81 to end at 159 and finish in 26th place, while Hunter Baggett shot rounds of 79 and 82 to finish at 161 and finish in 32nd place. Tyler Madill also competed for the Wildcats and shot 84 the second day after a 96 on day one to end with a 180 total and place 58th overall.
In women's action, sophomore Lucy Clark highlighted the women's performance with a solid round of 80 on the second day to go along with 86 in round one and finish with a score of 166. That score was good for third place overall, six shots behind medalist Demi Coertze of William Penn, who carded a 160 (79-81).
Overall, the women's team finished seventh overall with a two-day total of 794 (400-394). The host school, Lawrence Tech, won the event with a score of 676, carding rounds of 341 and 335.
Layne Ray finished 31st overall with an overall score of 194, carding rounds of 95 and 99, while Haley Barraza shot 197, rebounding from a 101 the first day to shot 96 the second day. Tara Bradley rounded out the women's contingent with a score of 237 to finish 42nd overall.
Both teams are scheduled to participate in the Challenge at Dalhousie at Dalhousie Golf Club next Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22, in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
